Why?

Due to problems with my electricity (see my previous post), I didn't get to write anything about the murder of Hrant Dink yet and I am not really up-to-date yet about any new developments since Friday evening (I just noticed from the headlines that a suspect has apparently been caught). From my quick scan, it seems that Onnik has extensive coverage here.

I found out when my boyfriend came back from his workplace where he had gone to fetch the electrician who works there. In between things he suddenly said: "Hrant Dink is dead. They shot him like a dog on the street in front of his office." What?! Say again?! Are you serious?

Later that evening we went back to the boyfriend's workplace for a bite to eat. Several Bolsohays (Armenians from Istanbul) work there, some of who knew Hrant Dink personally or had worked with him at Agos newspaper. Needless to say, they were all upset and sad, not being able to believe what had happened. All were worried what Dink's murder would mean for the situation of Armenians in Turkey and for the relationship (or non-existence of that) between Turkey and Armenia. And all were trying to find the answer to one question: Why?

Thanks for posting this, Myrthe. I had heard a little bit about Hrant Dink's murder on the news but this makes it much more real to me. I am glad that he was working to force the Turks to acknowledge genocide and am sorry that he was killed.
